Cybersecurity: predictions for 2023

With new technology advances, new regulations and the increase in cyberattacks, companies must stay abreast of trends and make the needed changes. For this new year, our SHIELD Office and their cybersecurity experts share their predictions for 2023!    

The Internet of Things (IOT) and Cloud Security

By 2023, according to Gartner analysts, there will be 43 billion IOT-connected devices worldwide. The IOTs are portable devices found in household appliances, cars, alarm systems or even industrial systems.

The more we connect and network connected devices (Amazon Alexa, Google, Apple Siri, surveillance cameras, etc.), the more potential loopholes that hackers can use to enter and access our data.

They are often used to directly store sensitive data. The producers have not necessarily used the "security by design" principle to develop their products. Thus, these devices are often missing security patches to cover the latest vulnerabilities. Moreover, they are often delivered with a software whose password remains by default without the client changing it.

In 2023, government measures will be implemented, with the aim of forcing producers to strengthen the security of their IOT products as well as their cloud networks.    

Teleworking becomes a priority for endpoint security

Following this global pandemic, many companies have adopted teleworking. As a result, it becomes necessary to increase the security of computers that can connect from anywhere in the world.

Before this pandemic, it was quite simple to secure computers behind perimeter security where the internal network was locked down. Thus, updates were easily distributed through the internal network and it was easy to control network traffic.

Nowadays, with teleworking it is often accepted to be able to connect from home or from an unknown wifi network of the company. Connecting to networks not controlled by the company can lead to phishing attacks where attackers trick their victims into divulging their passwords. It is also possible to come across other forms of attacks (identity theft, PC theft, etc.) to subsequently allow an information system to be compromised and ransomware software to be deployed to erase data of the business.    

AI will play a major role

The increase in the number of cyber attacks and the rising complexity are straining security teams facing this threat. Prediction via AI will be able to adapt a company's defense mechanisms to better protect itself. Machine learning algorithms will also be able to more effectively examine traffic, anomalies or behaviors deviating from habits.

We have seen this with Open AI's ChatGPT, which opens up the possibilities in conversational interactions with a robot. The GPT of Open AI is a machine learning platform allowing machine learning professionals to train and deploy artificial intelligence models.

Initiating and supporting a culture of awareness of IT security issues is a strategic issue for companies today. It is becoming increasingly important to learn how to develop an awareness of threats and take basic precautions to ensure security.
